Protecting Your Pets

  • Check your pet for ticks every time you go outdoors even if your pet is already on a preventative.

  • Run your fingers through your pet's fur with gentle pressure to feel for any small lumps or bumps.

    • Some species of ticks are no bigger than a grain of sand.  A deer tick is the size of a poppy seed.

    • Where to check your pet for ticks;

      • In the mouth

      • Under the Collar

      • Around the Eyelids

      • Under the Front Legs

      • Between the Back Legs

      • Between The Toes

      • In and Around The Ears

      • Around the Tail

  • If you find a tick remove it immediately with tweezers.

    • Send tick in to be tested for pathogens.

    • Record your tick for research and surveillance.

  • Vaccinate your dog for Lyme Disease annually.

  • Consult your veterinarian to keep ticks off your pets.
